Samples were pretreated following Brock et al. (2010). Briefly, bone was demineralised (0.5M HCl, overnight), washed in base (0.1M NaOH, 30 min, RT) and acid (0.5M HCl, 1 hour, RT) before gelatinisation (0.001M HCl, 20 hours, 70oC), filtration (Ezee(TM)) and ultrafiltration (Vivaspin(TM) 30 kDa MWCO)
A dremel drill was used to remove visibly altered shell leaving dense translucent carbonate; Charcoal was treated with HCl, NaOH and HCl.
